A Beginner's Guide to Cannabis Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the market, and for good reason. By isolating the plant's most desirable compounds, concentrates deliver intensified flavors, aromas, and potency in a remarkably efficient format. But walking into a dispensary and seeing terms like shatter, wax, budder, live resin, rosin, and diamonds can feel like learning a new language. The good news is that once you understand the basic categories, navigating concentrates becomes straightforward and even fun.

The first major distinction to understand is between solvent-based and solventless concentrates. Solvent-based products like shatter, wax, and live resin are made using solvents such as butane or CO2 to strip the trichomes from the plant material. The solvent is then purged, leaving behind a concentrated product. Shatter is glass-like and translucent, wax is opaque and crumbly, and budder has a smooth, creamy consistency. The differences in texture come down to processing techniques, but all three can deliver excellent flavor and potency. Live resin is a special category within solvent-based concentrates, made from fresh-frozen plant material rather than dried flower, which preserves the full spectrum of terpenes and produces an incredibly aromatic product.

On the solventless side, rosin has become a favorite among purists. Made by applying heat and pressure to flower or hash, rosin contains no residual solvents whatsoever. The result is a clean, flavorful concentrate that many enthusiasts consider the gold standard. Ice water hash, the precursor to many rosin products, uses nothing more than ice, water, and agitation to separate trichome heads from plant material. Diamonds, or THCa crystalline, represent the most potent form of concentrate available, often testing above 90% cannabinoid content. They're typically paired with a terpene-rich sauce to create a product that balances raw potency with complex flavor.

Choosing your first concentrate comes down to a few practical considerations. If you value flavor above all else, live resin or rosin will give you the most expressive terpene experience. If you want something easy to handle and dose, a stable wax or budder is forgiving and user-friendly. Shatter offers a long shelf life and clean aesthetic but can be tricky to work with due to its brittle texture. Diamonds and sauce are the enthusiast's choice, offering maximum potency alongside maximum flavor, but they're best approached after you've developed some familiarity with concentrates in general.

At Frost, our concentrate selection is curated with the same care we bring to our flower. Every product is lab-tested for potency, terpene content, and residual solvents. Our budtenders are happy to walk you through the options, suggest a starting point based on your experience level, and even demonstrate proper storage techniques. Concentrates open up an entirely new dimension of the cannabis experience, and we're here to make sure your introduction is a great one.
